LRV Calculator

This calculator may be used to calculate the Luminance Reflectance Value (LRV) between two elements. LRV Requirements vary for different building elements and types of building elements.

Stair nosing are used to meet regulations on stair edges. To achieve even the minimum slip rating, you can simply apply anti-slip tape. To achieve an enhanced look of your stair, we have a range of finishes and materials that comply with Australian standards. Our nosing range starts with a simple 50mm wide strip and moves up to an aluminium extrusion that holds a variety of carborundum and ribbed vinyl inserts. These are suitable for both hard and carpet surfaces and we have a range of colours to help you meet contrast requirements.
TGSIs or Tactile Ground Surface Indicators are a mandatory item in any new build or alteration that provide early warning of possible hazards to blind or vision-impaired people. These hazards would include but are not limited to, stairs, ramps, road crossings, bus and train platforms and overhead hazards.
Tactiles can be split into two types: Warning or hazard tactiles which warn as to a hazard in the pedestrian’s line of travel, and directional tactile indicators which are used to indicate and guide changes in direction from the pedestrian’s line of travel.
Both types are available in different materials such as polymeric, stainless steel and brass which can be selected depending on the location and budget of the particular application.

The Bowman-Sapolinski Equation is used to calculate the LRV readings, in line with Part B4 of AS 1428.1 (2009) and Part E3 / E5 of AS/NZ 1428.4.1 (2009).

The equation is of the form C = 125 (Y2 − Y1)/(Y1 + Y2 + 25). C is equal to the calculated contrast, and Y1 and Y2 refer to the luminous reflectance values (LRV) of the two surfaces to be calculated. Y1 is to be darker than or equal to Y2.
