Stair Nosings vs Stair Treads
They’re Not the Same
Stair nosings are one of the most misunderstood yet
critical components in accessible design.
Many projects are delayed, or hit with costly rework, due to one simple misunderstanding the confusion between stair treads and stair nosings in product specifications.

Stair nosings enhance grip, reduce wear, and ensure AS 1428.1-2009 compliance

Stair treads cover the full step but don’t provide necessary slip resistance

Stair Nosing Must-Haves
Stair nosing specification errors in an architect’s plan can put an entire project at risk leading to delayed delivery and costly rework compromising safety, design and budget – but most of all – impacting your reputation.
✔ Continuous across step width
✔ Non-glare, no sharp edges
✔ Durable for high-traffic use
✔ Consistent in dimension, finish, and contrast
✔ No reduction in the effective width of the stairs
Stair Nosing surface must be slip-resistant (especially important for external or wet areas) and must retain slip resistance over time.
Our range is certified as P5, the highest rating for slip resistance.
Stair nosings must have a minimum width of 50mm and maximum width of 75mm and must not project beyond the riser or tread edge more than necessary. Additionally, the total height of the stair and nosing cannot exceed 190mm as per building code regulations.
Nosings must have a minimum 30% contrast in LRV (Light Reflectance Value) compared to the surrounding tread and riser and must be clearly visible under various lighting conditions.
We provide LRV certificates for all our stair nosings, giving you the confidence that these conditions are met.
Nosings must be securely fixed with no lifting at the edges or corners and have a non-trip round or bevelled profile.
Recessed stair nosings must be installed flush with tread or in a recessed channel.
Stair nosings must be made from materials resistant to corrosion, wear and UV damage (if external), and be suitable for high-traffic environments.
